The Beatitudes: Znamenny Chant
The Beatitudes: Znamenny Chant based on a traditional Orthodox chant. The text is taken from Christ’s sermon on the mount in Matthew 5:1-12. The haunting refrain is sung after each of the ten short verses which alternate between a chant melody over a drone to harmonized chant and unison chant.
Written for three equal voices, this arrangement is easily used by mixed voices as well. Basses or altos can sing the lower part, tenors or sopranos the high part, and mid-range voices the melody.
